What is the Body Mass Index (BMI)?

The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is to approximate the amount of fat for humans based on an individual’s weight and height:

BMI = (mass (kg) / (height (m))²)

BMI does not actually measure the percentage of body fat. Formula used to calculated body fat %:

Body Fat (%) = = (1.20 × BMI) + (0.23 × Age) − (10.8 × gender) − 5.4

where gender is 1 for males and 0 for females.

What is the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of daily energy expended by humans at rest. In other words: if you lay in bed all day, this is the amount of energy what your body will burn. The calculator uses the following formula to calculate this:

BMR (kcal) = 370 + (21.6 * Lean Body Mass (kg))

Where Lean Body Mass (kg) = Body Mass (kg) – Body Fat (kg)

Body Mass Index for children
